What is IV Sedation?

IV or intravenous sedation is a procedure that allows your child's dentist to provide anti-anxiety medication, like those used in oral sedation, directly into your child's bloodstream. Your child will remain awake the entire time and will be able to respond to the dentist’s questions. However, your child may not remember much of anything once the medication wears off.

How Does IV Sedation Work?

The procedure involves inserting an ultra-thin needle into a vein, usually on the top of the patient's hand. The sedative is administered through this tube so it goes directly to the patient's bloodstream. The IV stays in the patient's vein during the entire procedure, putting them into a state of deep relaxation that is more potent than oral sedation or laughing gas.

What Medication is Used?

IV sedation uses benzodiazepines to reduce fear and anxiety during the dental procedure. The most common medications used are Midazolam and Diazepam. As anti-anxiety medicines, they’re designed to relax patients and make them sleepy.

How Safe is This Treatment

IV sedation is extraordinarily safe when administered by qualified dental practitioners, such as the pediatric dentists here at our South Miami office.
