Some children (like adults) can experience fear and anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist. Whether during routine oral care or a more extensive dental procedure, it is important that children feel comfortable and relaxed while they are visiting the dentist. If you feel that your child may benefit from sedation to reduce anxiety during dental visits, consider reaching out to Dr. Mario Martinez and Dr. Danielle Fernandez of South Miami Pediatric Dental Associates.
Benefits of Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry involves using mild to deep sedative medications for relaxation or even sleep during dental procedures as a way to avoid fear and anxiety that some children may otherwise experience at the dentist. Not only does a child's increased fear and anxiety affect their overall health and experience at the dentist, but it can also create a challenging situation for dentists to be able to complete oral care safely and effectively. As a way to give your child the best possible care and experience, many people turn to sedation dentistry for help.
Types of Sedation
Here are a few options for types of sedation that YOUR PEDIATRIC DENTIST may consider when choosing what works best for your child. The (3) common types of sedation include oral sedation, intravenous (IV) sedation, and general anesthesia (GA).
With oral sedation the child drinks a liquid medicine (or swallows a small pill), your child will still be awake but experiencing increased relaxation and decreased stress. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is usually used in conjunction with oral medication. Most children report having no memory of the visit.
With intravenous sedation, medication is administered through a needle/IV in the arm, this procedure is usually completed by a pediatric anesthesiologist and provides a more moderate sedative effect. During this type of sedation, your child will usually be asleep.
With general anesthesia, this type of sedation is done at a hospital by an anesthesiologist and his/her team. Your child will be completely asleep throughout the procedure. Our doctors have been on staff at Nicklaus Children's Hospital for many years.
